Rulers gain followership by force, leaders by inspiration #### [Rulers gain followership by force, leaders by inspiration](https://publish.obsidian.md/bryan-jenks/Z/Rulers+gain+followership+by+force%2C+leaders+by+inspiration) --- Being forced into subservience through coercion (e.g., control of resources or legal authority), is an act perpetrated by a _“Ruler”_. To be a **Leader** is to inspire followership in others so that they follow you freely, gladly, and of their own volition. **Leaders** in contrast to _rulers_ instill trust and enthusiasm in their followers instead of fear. Leaders have the vision to identify the direction to move in and then influence others to contribute to the group goal and move forward in that direction. By inspiring others to contribute the group is better able to achieve its common goal through the inspiration of leadership.
